Honorary King Pins In Memoriam Past Members

You want to know more about The King Pins?

Hawaii's Premier Classic Rock cover band was formed by guitarist Harvey Yamauchi in September of 2001, and currently features five experienced musicians. Donning bowling shirts and bowling shoes to maintain "period consistency" with the playlist, the Band plays restaurants, night clubs, special events, and private engagements of all kinds, State-wide. Audiences appreciate the diversity of the music as well as the on-stage antics of the Band members.

In addition to the regular clubs and parties, The King Pins have been asked to perform at some impressive special events. In 2009, the King Pins went on the road and traveled to Seattle, Washington to open the show for the Seattle Boomer's Blast 2009. Earlier in 2009, the Band played for an estimated 3000 guests at a Dental Convention held outdoors at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Lagoon on the Green. In 2007 and 2008, the Band entertained skippers and crew in several Transpac Regatta events, wowed the crowd at the NFL Pro Bowl block party in Waikiki as well as Pro Bowl events at Aloha Stadium and Kapiolani Park, worked major conventions at the Hale Koa Hotel, Ihilani Resort, Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and Turtle Bay Resort, and entertained thousands of runners at the Nike Fun Run in Waikiki. The band was also the first local rock cover band to be featured on the Night Time Show with Andy Bumatai, a popular local television show. In 2006, The King Pins entertained members of our armed forces at White Plains Beach in Kalaeloa, Hickam AFB, and Pearl Harbor, played for the NFL Pro Bowl pregame party at Kapiolani Park, and played at the Taste of Honolulu for Easter Seals. In 2005, the Band played at the Boomer Blast at the sold-out Hawaiian Hut and the official NFL Pro Bowl Tail Gate party, complete with NFL cheerleaders and Hall of Famer Dan Marino.

In 2004, The King Pins opened for Grammy-award winning alt-rock group Train, at a private convention at Ihilani Resort. On September 11, 2004, The King Pins joined a celebration of American freedom, a re-enactment of the Boston Tea Party, at the Falls of Clyde. The band entertained Latoya Jackson's birthday party guests and the press on May 30, 2004, at All Star Hawaii in Waikiki. University of Hawaii home football games would not be the same without The King Pins' regular appearance to warm up the crowd in either of Aloha Stadium's North or South Concourses or the hottest ticket of all on game day, The Aloha Tailgate Zone.

On September 26, 2003, The King Pins appeared live on stage with 96 beautiful contestants for the Hawaiian Tropic International Swimsuit Model Competition at the Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku. On October 25, 2003, The King Pins provided pre-concert entertainment at the Neal Blaisdell Center Arena before the performances of legendary rockers Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Chuck Berry.

The King Pins bring an impressive array of musical talent to their performances:

Harvey Yamauchi, the band leader, sings lead vocals, exhibiting an impressive diversity in styles, including straight ahead rock 'n roll, soulful R&B, and whiskey bottle blues numbers. He also plays a mean guitar and harmonica, too!

Bass player Randall Rosenberg leads the rhythm section, primarily on his Dingwall AB-2 5 string, or on either his Fender American Standard Jazz Bass or Musicman Stingray, using fingerstyle or slap as needed. Randall also sings lead and background vocals, giving the Band more flexibility and vocal range.

Brad Choi, aka "the DW" (drum whore) has been playing drums since the early 70's and has performed at some of the biggest venues in Hawaii, as well as on the Mainland and in Japan. Sometimes called "the Human Jukebox", Brad can play just about any song out there.

Mitch Fukumoto is a keyboard "fixture" in the Honolulu music scene. Having been a part of some of the most successful bands in town, and also a "first call" sideman, Mitch is a welcome addition to the lineup.

Finally, the newest member of the Band is Alan Kaneda. Alan is the Music Major of the band, and brings a wealth of talent on guitar and vocals. A rocker at heart, Alan is an integral part of our sound!

Originally, the Band was formed with the understanding that, due to the busy work and family schedules of the individual Band members, music would be strictly "part time" with no more than 1-2 gigs per month accepted. However, the Band quickly discovered two things that required a change in this philosophy: 1) playing rock music together as The King Pins was incredibly fun, and, 2) several clubs had become interested in booking the band on a regular basis. Recently, the Band has been performing several gigs per month and remains open-minded about the quantity of monthly performances.

To keep things 'fresh' for the audience, the King Pins' playlist changes constantly, and no two performances are the same. The Band takes requests and if you are planning a special party and need that certain special song, let the Band know a few weeks in advance and we will be happy to play it for you.
